As the youngest member of the Western Clydesdales Cup Team, Drew Timms is proving age is no barrier.

The talented hooker may only be 18 but he has proved himself in the past two trial matches and holding his own in ability and confidence.

“I love it. I started playing footy at five and really never looked back,” Timms said.

“It’s something my older brother Rhys and I have always done, and I guess when he started playing, I used to just follow him and do everything he did. In fact, mum said she had a hard time keeping me off the field when he was playing when I was still too young to play.”

Growing up in Brisbane, Timms played for Narangba Rangers until he was 12 and then moved across to the Redcliffe Dolphins.

“Although I played a lot of other sports it was always league that was my number one and when I got a scholarship to Wavell State High, a rugby league school, I knew then that I wanted to give it a real chance of making it,” he said.

“I played quite a bit of representative footy in my schooling years including Queensland School Boys for Under 12 and Under 15 and really enjoyed it and learnt so much at both these camps.

“Now moving onto the next chapter playing in the Queensland Cup is something I am extremely grateful for.

“Mind you it was a touch decision moving from the Dolphins and at such a young age but after talking to Jason (Alchin – head coach) I knew it was a good move.

“I wouldn’t have got the opportunity to play Cup if I hadn’t have moved to Toowoomba and to get to play alongside such experience is pretty surreal.

“I am loving living up here and the opportunities that have come my way including my job with NRG Services.”

Timms got to go up against older brother Rhys in the Western Clydesdales trial match against Redcliffe last week (11 February) which he said was exciting for the family.

“It was definitely different seeing us in opposing jerseys when I have been wearing the red and white for so long as well, but it was good out and pretty cool we will be both playing in the Queensland Cup,” he said.

Timms will play in Round 1 on Sunday 12 March against PNG Hunters at Clive Berghofer Stadium.
