Past Players Weekend Celebrations

written by Lara Santo

This Sunday 16th June, the Western Clydesdales Rugby League Football Club are hosting a momentous occasion to honour and celebrate the enormous legacy left by past players, official, staff, coaches and more who have made an impact in keeping this club alive and thriving.

This day holds extreme importance to the Club and is a massive day on the Clydesdales 2024 calendar. Sunday is a day full of what this club is about, footy! This is an amazing opportunity to watch our Clydesdales in action taking on the Northern Pride and experiencing the local junior talent that Toowoomba Rugby League produces with our U17's boys setting the stage earlier on in the day.

The Western Clydesdales have a rich and long history which has helped shape the club that we know and love today. On the 18th June 1924, Toowoomba first beat the touring English international team. That night at a civic reception the Mayor at the time, Mayor Annand, first used the term Galloping Clydesdales. From there the Clydesdale brand was born.

This year marks the centenary of this momentous occasion. The past players weekend is also celebrating the side of 1984 who will be celebrating the 40-year anniversary of their win against the touring English side, replicating the 1924 side. The 1984 side consisted of future Australian representatives Mark Hohn and Dan Stains.

In honour of the 1984 achievement, the Western Clydesdales will be proudly wearing a heritage jersey to celebrate the achievements and footprint this team has left on the club.

This weekend does not only recognise the achievements of these two teams, but it also recognises the legacy that has been left for over 100 years in the Clydesdales community. This celebration acts as a reunion bringing together past players, supporters and enthusiasts alike for a memorable occasion.

The celebrations don't stop here! On the 15th June, the Western Clydesdales are hosting a special race day at the Clifford Park Turf Club. This will be another day filled with fun, camaraderie and celebration.

Don't miss this opportunity to be a part of Western Clydesdales history. Whether you're a seasoned supporter or a newcomer to the sport, Past Players Day promises something for everyone. Mark your calendars for Sunday 16th June and come celebrate with us at the Toowoomba Sport Ground. Let's make this a day to remember as we honour our past, embrace the present, and look forward to an exciting future together.
