The Wagners Western Mustangs got on the board with a 22-22 draw with Souths-Logan in the opening round of the Hastings Deering Colts.

We got off to a great start when fullback Benji Neliman built on his great pre-season to score a double in the first 20 minutes to establish a 12-0 lead.

Souths-Logan then responded with two tries to make it 12-12 at half-time.

Winger Mamakumai Naiyep crossed for a try just after half-time to give us back the lead before Souths-Logan scored two tries in five minutes to hit the front 22-16.

A try to hooker Brandon Clarke and conversion from Xander Dunemann got the Mustangs back level again, leaving the score 22-22 with seven minutes to play.

Neither side could break the deadlock as the score finished 22-22.

Coach Eugene Seddon thought we were the better team on the day and was disappointed to have to settle with the draw.
